¿ At The End of Your Tether ?

Alan Parsons Project lyrics – inspired by Edgar Allan Poe

"At the far end of your tether
And your thoughts won’t fit together
So you sleep light or whatever
And the night goes on forever
The your mind change like the weather
Your in need of doctor tarr and professor fether

Even clouds seem bright and breezy
’cause the livin’ is free and easy
See the rat race in a new way
Like you’re walkin’ up to a new day
It’s a wise thing if you’re clever
Take a lead from doctor tarr and professor fether

Find the end of the rainbow
Fly wherever the winds blow
Laugh at life like a sideshow
Just what you need to make you feel better

Satisfaction altogether
Guaranteed by doctor tarr and professor fether"

“Forever Is Composed Of Nows” emily dickenson

Children know it, dogs and cats know it, elderly people who sit and relax on their terraces know it.  They all know that sumptuous feeling of not thinking about what they’re going to do in an hours time, they are living the now.  A strong visual of what it is like to get lost in the enjoyment of a moment would be to picture the scene when a young child is told it’s time to leave a birthday party.

Life can be filled with moments that you wished would last forever, but they don’t.  Life is change.

Sometimes we / I run down the road of productiveness and  over-planning and jeopardize the joy of lingering in a moment that gives pleasure.   I admit, I’ve heard myself say, “I need to work on having more fun,”  and then laughed at the oxymoron of this statement.  I’ve been guilty of thinking too much about the future and glossing over the now.

When I linger over Emily Dickenson’s words “Forever is composed of nows.”  it’s easy to glimpse what it is I need to do to make my forever the best of now.

I Couldn’t Resist this one.

Monty Python skits crack me up.

Sharing the Wealth, the wealth of good web sites

I want to share three web sites that are all about  spying the good, as well as being entertaining, and giving pause for thought.  All three of them are easy to subscribe to.

Stella a friend in California sent me the link to Daily Good a site that started with a college student, Nipun Mehta sending out fun daily quotes to his friends and grew into a daily news story with almost 100.000 subscribers.  Mehta didn’t stop with quotes he also founded Charity Focus and the Daily Good is now fully run by their volunteers,  They say their philosophy is quite simple:  “be the change.”  Check out their FAQ, in the about section, they appreciate input.  I’ll warn you though, the stories they post are addictive, I spent a good chunk of time yesterday reading their archives.  Time well spent.

A site that has been a personal favourite of mine for a few years is  Rob Brezsny’s Free Will Astrology.  If you subscribe to his horoscope newsletter he’ll deliver into your inbox each week some of the most entertaining horoscopes you’ll ever read, he has a unique way of using history in his predictions.  He’s a pro at spotting the good.  My favourite section of his newsletter outside of his horoscope is when he highlights News In Brief.  Tidbits like:   “China and India, which comprise one-third of the earth’s population, have more than twice the wealth they had in 1989.  —  Rising rates of intermarriage are helping to dissipate ethnic and religious strife worldwide. — Death rates from cancer are shrinking .—Acreage devoted to organic farming is increasing rapidly.”  to quote just a few.

Susan Biali, M.D. is a woman I have recently had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with here in Cabo.  She’s another transplanted Canadian who fell in love not just with Mexico but also her now Mexican born husband.  She left a successful medical practice to follow a dream and way more than she dreamed for started following her travels, including a professional career as a Flamenco Dancer.  I don’t really like the cliché, power-house but that’s the only way I can think to describe the energy she exudes and the positive aura that radiates from her.  Check out her web site and tune into her blog; Your Prescription for Life. She also has a book on the doorstep of publication.

If anyone has some other sites they’d like to share send them along and I’ll find a space to feature them. I’m in the process of learning how to navigate this site and will soon figure out how to put a link reference on the sidebar to all these good sites.

Happy Wednesday.

“Tune out of the election and in to what matters.” Gordon Gibson

Yesterday in my favourite Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail there was an article in the opinion section written by Gordon Gibson a former politician from British Columbia.

He says – “But we will have a government whatever happens in the election, and whoever directs it will not move far from the public good. Governors may – indeed, will – make mistakes, but public opinion will correct them soon enough.

There is an old piece of wisdom that is relevant here. It is along the lines of, “I care not who writes a nation’s laws, if I may write its songs.” The idea is that in a democracy, the general will of the people will govern, and the truly important leaders are not the managers of the day, but rather those in politics, business, religion and the arts who shape that general will.”  I you would like to read the full article you can go to,  Tune out the election and in to what matters

His thoughts seem like such a gentle ideology when placed up against the hyper-activity and angst surrounding the elections across the border.

It’s good to have exposure to different perspective, whether we agree or not.

Okay my international friends, here’s a little quiz.  Raise your hand if you knew that Canada has a Federal Election taking place this year.  Maybe it’s not a fair question and I shouldn’t be too smug. Having lived outside of Canada for so many years I haven’t always kept current as to who the Prime Minister is—it’s Trudeau isn’t it…

A Guaranteed Smile – Be Happy

Even if you’ve seen this feel good video before and heard this classic song, it’s worth the 3:43 minutes to watch it again and start your week off with a smile.  All the actors look like they’re having such a great time.  I’m wondering how old Robin Williams is in this?

“You Control Your Attitude, or It Controls You” anonymous

When I was growing up and a kid was caught being a spoiled brat, parents favored expressions like:   – “that kid needs an attitude adjustment,”  or  “he’s asking for a good slap up the head.”   The irony of a good verses a bad slap up the head went unnoticed by my parents generation.

Knowing from my past exactly how one acts when in need of an attitude adjustment, I recently was surprised to recognize the kid in need of one was me.  Our plan to move back to Canada for J’s high school was put on hold for reasons out of my control and for a time I allowed resentment and discontent to infiltrate my life.   Everywhere I looked in our town I saw wrongs.   I lamented about the dangers of our highway, moaned about the heat, and ranted about the high costs and low service.  My attitude sucked.

The good news is I snapped out of it…  Do you know how debilitating it can be working on being unhappy?  Once I stopped focusing on what wasn’t right there was once again room to see what was.  Much better to find the good.  I guess no matter our age, a little attitude adjustment now and then is in order and it’s always good to know the choice is ours.

Loving Who You Are

I stumbled across this video while having my morning coffee.  I had intended to write something more philosophical or profound as my first post but when I heard Svetlana Pankatrona say, “It just feels good” when asked about having the longest legs in the world, her smile and words moved into first place.

There’s a special glow around people who feel good about themselves.
